| National Meeting Position Statements and Issues |
| In addition to the Annual Study Week, the Southwest
Liturgical Conference is involved in a number of other efforts of
regional and national concern. Each year we present position
statements and issues of concern from our region to the National Meeting
of the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions and the Bishops'
Committee on the Liturgy. At the 1993 meeting in Rochester, N.Y.,
the Region 10 position statement calling for Spanish Language Resources
and Rites passed by a strong vote. At the 1994 meeting in St.
Louis, Region 10 called for an Updating of Guidelines for Multilingual
Liturgical Celebrations. Each of these recent position statements
demonstrates the regional concern for the pastoral needs of the
worshipping communities we serve. [Top] |
| Hispanic Music Competition |
| In alternate years the Southwest Liturgical Conference
sponsors a Hispanic Music Competition. The competition encourages
and recognizes new talent within the liturgical community. In
addition to cash prizes awarded through the competition, the original
works are performed at the Study Week where the prize is awarded. [Top] |
| Commissioning of Music for Liturgical Celebrations |
| In years in which the Hispanic Music Competition is not
held, the SWLC has committed some of its financial resources to the
commissioning of music for liturgical celebration. Through
cooperation with music publishers, we are encouraging the composition of
bilingual music for various seasons and celebrations within the
liturgical year, especially music for the RCIA, psalmody and service
music. [Top] |
| Networking |
| At the 1994 May Board Meeting, the Board of Directors
entered into an intense dialogue with representatives of the Mexican
American Cultural Center and the Instituto de Liturgia Hispana to
discover ways in which we might better serve the Hispanic community in
our region. We are in the process of developing a number of plans
including the translation of materials for liturgical education.
We are also exploring the production of videos for the training of
liturgy committees and other parish liturgical ministers. The SWLC
has committed its people, its creativity, and its financial resources to
these projects over the coming years. [Top] |
| Sharing of Resources |
| The members of Region 10 are continually networking to
share resources in the form of ideas, information, programs and
materials, and personnel. Many times experts in various areas of
liturgy are invited to present workshops and programs in other diocese
of the region. We also collaborate on ideas for education and
formation of liturgical ministers and the assembly. There is a
generous spirit among the people of our conference who are always
willing to reach out and help. [Top] |
| Awards |
| Each January at the Annual Study Week the Board of
Directors presents an award to recognize outstanding contributions to
the work of liturgical renewal in the region. These awards are a
sign of commendation and appreciation for those who have worked
faithfully in a variety of liturgical ministries; they also serve as
inspiration and encouragement for those who are just beginning to work
in the area of liturgy and liturgical music. [Top] |
