Symbol: The Language of Liturgy

- Rev. Roger Dorcy
All too often, the meaning of symbol in Catholic worship is reduced to its legalistic application or, worse, seen as some magical mystery tour with hidden source and secret benefit. Stephen Happel defined symbol as a "complex of gestures, sounds, images, and/or words that evoke, invite and persuade participation in that to which they refer." In other words, symbol in worship should be the most understandable and human element we have at our disposal. This presentation will explore the journey from common misunderstanding to the living, breathing, true nature of symbol.  [Back]

The Ministry of Sacristan

- David Wood

“`Tell her to help me!´  The Lord said to her in reply, `You are anxious and worried about many things.´”  Does this sound familiar?  What should we learn from the Lord’s reply?  The sacristan often seems to be caught in a Catch 22.  We are called to prayer and worship BUT there is so much to be done.  This workshop will address the following: What is the ministry of sacristan?  How should we prepare?  What do we need?  Where do we get it?  Why aren’t garage sale leftovers appropriate for liturgy?  Can we be ready for Christmas in three hours?
