1. Become What You Pray

     Continuing the mystagogical approach sounded in the opening talk, this poetic and musical presentation will explore how in the eucharistic prayer the bread and the cup of wine are transformed, and how the community is to be transformed as well.  [Top]

2. Essential Space for Art and Devotion
1. Ken Griesmer
     The images of Christ, the Blessed Mother and the Communion of Saints that adorn our places of worship play an important role in expressing and celebrating our Catholic identity. This session will begin with a brief examination of the history of sacred art in the place of worship. Then, recognizing the essential nature of private devotional prayer, a vision will be offered for the reintegration of quality and appropriate liturgical and devotional art in the church building. Practical questions such as dealing with existing art and finding artists will be addressed.
    
Ken is a liturgical design consultant working around the country from his studio in Albuquerque, NM. He is a founding member of the Association of Consultants for Liturgical Space and serves on the board as past president. He currently serves the Archdiocese of Santa Fe as a member of the Liturgical Commission, along with the RCIA and Environment and Art Subcommittees.  [Top]

3. RCIA: The Business of All the Baptized
1. Michael R. Prendergast
     Explore the four continuous periods of the RCIA in community with resources at hand and examine ways in which the Body of Christ, as represented by the local church, understand and show their concern for the initiation of adults and children.
    
Michael is Liturgy Specialist and editor of Today’s Liturgy at Oregon Catholic Press in Portland, Oregon. Before coming to OCP, he was director of the Office of Worship for the Diocese of Great Falls, Billings. MT.

4. Multicultural Liturgy/Music
1. Mary Frances Reza & Michelle Lobato
     Multicultural Liturgies: Respect for the People Praising God Cultural diversity in worship witnesses the maturing faith of our local church. Let us explore the music, language and customs born out of the Roman Catholic Faith tradition that can embellish and support the great prayer of worship.
    
Mary Frances is an educator, liturgical musician and composer of Hispanic music for worship. She serves on the Executive Board of the Institute of Hispanic Liturgy, is a consultant for OCP, Flor y Canto I and II, and is the Director of Liturgy at St. Francis Cathedral in Santa Fe, NM. Her music is found in several collections: Aclamamos al Seńor, Dios es amor, Cantaré Eternamente, and other publications.
     Michelle, Director of Pastoral Music at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Colorado Springs has a background in music, bilingual education and mass communications. She has 20 years experience liturgical music, choir directing and cantoring, and also a performer of Spanish Colonial Music of the Southwest and mariachi.

5. Competence Building for the Preaching Ministry

     This workshop offers "hand’s on" experience of working with selected Scriptural/Lectionary texts and model preaching texts that incorporate the characteristics of quality homiletic preaching. Participants will be offered a model of preaching preparation and have the opportunity to explore means to become more consistent, confident preachers.  [Top]

6. All Times and Seasons Obey Your Laws
1. Rev. Leon Strieder
     How do we understand time as a "creature"? How do we celebrate the timeless mysteries of God in our time? A look at a theology of time and the Liturgical Year as a blessing to help us enter God’s time.
    
Father Strieder is Vice-Rector and Professor of Liturgy and Sacraments at St. Mary’s Seminary in Houston, TX. He is also chair for the Liturgical Commission for the Diocese of Austin.  [Top]

7. Preparing an Effective Lector Training and Formation Process
1. Dolly Sokol
     How are lectors trained, formed and renewed in your parish? Come ready to share your process, listen to others and gain insight into improving this vital parish ministry.
    
Dolly is the Director of the Office of Worship and Christian Initiation for the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, NM. She holds a master’s degrees in Theologoical Studies, Communications/Theatre and Management. She has ministered in the area of liturgy at the parish, diocesan and national level for over 25 years.

8.Built of Living Stones: Using the New Building and Renovation
1. Guidelines of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops
1. Robert Habiger
     How does the liturgy committee, pastor and the hired professional use this new document of the Church? This workshop reviews the contents of the document, how and why it was written, its authority, and what it means to a parish building or renovation project.
    
Robert is a Liturgical Design Consultant in Albuquerque, NM. Current projects include Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Dodge City, KS and St. Mary’s Cathedral in Colorado Springs, CO.

9. Experience Flor y Canto, Segunda Edición
    Rudolfo Lopez (OCP)
     This workshop is a presentation for the new Hispanic hymnal, Flor y Canto, Segunda Edición.  Participants will be introduced to new material that is rich in ethnic diversity and musical style.  This workshop is directed to those who are familiar with Flor y Canto and those who are looking for a new Hispanic Hymnal for their worshing community.
     Rudy has been a Director of Music at several parishes in the Los Angeles area, as well as a composer, soloist, and arranger.  He is a graduate of California State University at Los Angeles where he completed a Bachelor in Music Composition.  Currently, he is a music editor for Oregon Catholic Press.  [Top]

10.    Liturgy Preparation Involves Coordinating the Efforts of Many
Marty Haugen
     Liturgy is a sacrament of unity with God and with one another.  Come explore how this unity begins long before the Greeting of the Mass, as presiders, litugists, music ministers and other litugical ministers cooperate to prepare celebrations that respect the universal Church’s guidelines and are also sensitive to the needs of the local community.
     Marty Haugen is a liturgical composer from Eagan, Minnesota.  For the past fifteen years, he has presented workshops nationally and internationally for the Roman Catholic and Protestant liturgical ministers.  Mary has over 250 separate titles published through GIA on more than twenty recorded collections.

     How can the leadership of faith communities call forth, prepare and utilize the gift for preaching that is offered by an expanded pool of lay and ordained preachers of God’s Word? This workshop will share the pastoral vision, canonical guidelines, and actual models of training/formation used in several regions of the country to assure that our communities have access to competent, diverse, and empowered preachers. Let the Symbols Speak--This workshop will include a guided experience of our liturgical symbols, reflection on how they speak to us and shape our identity, and ideas for using them effectively.

3. Sponsorship: Walking the Journey of Faith
1. Victoria M. Tufano
     A sponsor serves as a bridge between the Community of faith and the catechumen or candidate, as a model of living the Christian way of life faith, and as a companion on the journey of faith. Before taking on this important role, a potential sponsor should reflect on his or her relationship with God and with the Church. This working session will provide a way to begin this reflection. Sponsors and those responsible for training sponsors will find this session useful.
    
Victoria is senior editor at Liturgy Training Publications, in Chicago, IL. She is the editor of Catechumenate: A Journal of Christian Initiation and various other resources for Christian Initiation and Liturgy; she is also the author of LTP’s Guide for ministers of Communion. She serves as a team member for institutes of the North American Forum on the Catechumenate and as a member of the Advisory Council of the Notre Dame Center for Pastoral Liturgy.  [Top]

4. Good Liturgy begins with Good Liturgical Formation

     "Getting to the Heart of Liturgy/Taking Liturgy to Heart" In this workshop participants will be invited to explore more deeply some of the underlying principles of liturgical renewal, in an effort to get beyond the externals that sometimes divide us, and lead us to the inner reality at the heart of liturgy where we can be united.
    
Maxine is the Director of the Office of Liturgy for the Diocese of Salt Lake City, UT. She has served on the SWLC Board since 1996.  [Top]

5. The Eucharistic Liturgy and Popular Spirituality
1. Bishop David L. Ricken
     "The Eucharist, as source and summit of who we are, must overflow into our daily spirituality. This dynamic is related to the return of popular forms of prayer to the Sacred Liturgy. A true appreciation of the action of the community in liturgy only grows if ones personal and spiritual life is fostered outside of the time of the communal liturgy. This session will be a conversation around the relationship between worship and private prayer."

6. Instrumental Interludes and Introductions in Liturgical Music
1.Lorenzo Martinez
     This workshop will give practical suggestions for using our musical gifts to enhance musical selections with appropriate introductions and appropriate use of instrumental music, especially in bi-cultural multi-cultural worship.
    
Lorenzo is a master folk violinist and expert of folk music of the southwest and recording artist who has preserved the music of New Mexico and southern Colorado in the Archives of the Smithsonian.  [Top]

7. Become What You Eat

     Continuing these mystagogical explorations, this poetic and musical presentation in particular will explore in ritual and tune and text how the communion rite teaches us both to receive the Body of Christ and become the Body of Christ.  [Top]

8. Liturgical Esthetics Beyond Flowers and Fabric
1. Rev. Kevin Novack
     In this workshop we will explore the human need for symbolic expressions of beauty, goodness and truth with a focus on the nature of art and aesthetic as an invitation to encounter the Holy Order. How are aesthetics able to facilitate a unique encounter with Christ in the Eucharistic Assembly? How do we create an environment of beauty, goodness and truth that calls and converts us? How do we raise the aesthetic IQ of our communities?
    
Father Novack is a priest of the Diocese of Pueblo and a former member of the Paulist Fathers. He is presently pastor of four small parish communities in the four corners region of Colorado.  [Top]

9. Taizé Prayer

     Have you ever experienced the beauty and simplicity of the music of Taizé?  Explore ways to incorporate this ecumenical prayer into your community.  Discover why people are drawn to this contemplative prayer experience and discuss the ecumenical implications for unity and reconciliation.

     For more than thirty years, Eleazar has composed music for musicals, movies, television, orchestras, mariachi and folk groups and for the St. Cecelia Concert series competition, which began in November 1992.
