 Keynote Speaker

The Legacy of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy: Forty Years of Seeking Full, Conscious, and Active Participation.

—Most Reverend Donald W. Trautman

The Holy Spirit breathed new life into the Church through the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy (CSL). The presentation will seek to unlock the treasures of the document by re-examining its key concepts and historical impact on the pastoral and worship life of the church. During the past forty years the church has moved from liturgical reform to liturgical refinement. To what extent do post-Vatican II documents and legislation reflect the original vision of CSL? What are the successes and failures of liturgical renewal?  Why are there calls for a reform of the reform? How do we keep alive and revitalize the CSL?

Bishop Trautman, Bishop of Erie, PA, completed his theological studies at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, studying under Karl Rahner and Josef Jungman where he received his S.T.L. and was ordained a priest in 1962. He studied biblical languages at Catholic University, Washington, DC, and earned his S.S.L. in 1965 from Pontifical Biblical Institute, Rome. He earned his doctorate degree from St. Thomas Aquinas University in Rome. A former chairman of the Bishops Committee on the Liturgy, Bishop Trautman is presently chair of the Doctrine Committee for the U.S.C.C.B. He is the 1997 recipient of the Notre Dame University Center of Pastoral Liturgy’s Michael Mathis Award. He has received several honorary degrees and is a Gold Medal recipient from St. John’s University in New York. A frequent contributor to America Magazine, he has lectured extensively throughout the country.
